Gulang Yu
The Island of Gulang Yu reached by passenger ferry from Xiamen.  It is protected by
this great statue of Koxinga, a Ming loyalist, which is the first thing you see as you
approach the island.
Because of its beautiful beaches, the island is a very popular spot to have wedding
portraits taken.  The day I was visiting, I counted eight different couples being
photographed.  The hotel I was staying at in Xiamen averages 360 wedding
receptions per year.
The only way onto the island is by walk on ferry.  There are no motor vehicles on the
island except for some electric golf cart shuttles to help you get about.  It is quite hilly.  It
is worth paying a few extra Yuan to ride on the upper deck.  It is less crouded and stuffy
and you have a better view.
One of many scenic spots along the water.
The island is extremely peaceful with many back alleys to wonder down and trails to
explore.  It even has a very nice aquarium with a dolphin and sea lion show.
